Pupillage

Pupillage at 14 Gray's Inn Square
14 Gray's Inn Square recognises the importance for the future of both Chambers and the Bar in general of recruiting candidates of the highest calibre and offering them first-rate training. We are a busy but friendly set and pupils are encouraged to play a full role in the life of Chambers.

As we are a specialist family set, pupils can expect to gain experience in every area of family law. Pupils will also have the opportunity, however, to see and undertake other types of work undertaken in Chambers such as general civil or education law.

Chambers offers two 12-month funded pupillages a year. Each pupillage is usually divided between three pupil supervisors. This is to make sure that not only do the pupils have the chance to see a wide spectrum of work but they are also not introduced to a new pupil supervisor at the same time as beginning to undertake their own work. We also ensure that pupils accompany as many members of Chambers as possible and, in particular, pupils are encouraged to go to court with more junior tenants as they approach the start of their second-six.

We are organised on democratic principles and value diversity and tolerance within the setting of a friendly cohesive whole.

Applications for Pupillage
Chambers seeks pupils with a strong academic record. Candidates are normally expected to have obtained at least a 2.1 degree but exceptional CVs will be considered.

We also seek candidates with a firm commitment to the Family Bar.

Applications for pupillage are normally accepted through OLPAS only (the summer season) and are subject to the timetable set down by OLPAS. Chambers operate an Equal Opportunities policy.

At present each pupillage award is £12,000.00 per year. The fees that pupils earn from their own work are in addition to this. The award figure is subject to annual review. Chambers also fund any training that pupils are required to undertake. We do not accept sponsored students.

14 Gray's Inn Square generally looks to recruit from its own pupils but does accept applications from outside applicants. For the past few years Chambers has taken on at least one junior tenant a year. We have a very good track record in helping to find alternative placements for those pupils who do not obtain a tenancy with us.

Third-Six Pupils
The decision on recruitment of third-six pupils is made by the management committee in the light of the amount of work available. Applications should be in writing by way of a CV with covering letter.

Please address all correspondence to Ronan O'Donovan. We ask that any queries about pupillage are made by way of letter or e-mail.
