Equal Opportunities
Chambers has made a commitment to Equal Opportunities practice and procedures.
Our equal opportunity commitment is as follows and as appearing as an Appendix to the Chambers Constitution:-
'The following equal opportunities statement is based on the equal opportunities policy statement adopted by the Bar Council Secretariat:
"This chambers is committed to providing equality of opportunity for all tenants, pupils and employees of the chambers, or applicants for tenancies, pupillages or jobs and for all individuals seeking service from the chambers irrespective of race, ethnic origin, sex, marital status, religion, disability, political persuasion or sexual orientation.
The policy will be implemented in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Bar Council's Equality Code of Chambers.
The Management Committee will be responsible for the implementation of the policy. It is the responsibility of all tenants, pupils and employees to ensure that his/her responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the equal opportunities policy."'
The Chambers provides its services for the general community and not for any discrete client group which might be interpreted as discriminatory.
We are committed to providing equal treatment and opportunities to all job applicants and personnel in the Chambers in accordance with the guidance issued by the Bar Council. We are aware of the provisions in the relevant legislation, including:-
A) The Equal Pay Act 1970;
B) Sex Discrimination Act 1975;
C) Race Relations Act 1976;
D) Disabled Persons (Employment) Acts 1944 and 1958;
E) Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978;
F) Disabilities Discrimination Act 1996.
We are also aware that the Commission for Racial Equality Code of Practice (1984) and the Equal Opportunities Commission Code of Practice (1985) provide guidelines for recognised best practice. We have reviewed these guidelines and have applied appropriate measures to our personnel management procedures and policies.
The Management Committee monitors developments and changes in legislation / best practice in this area and will amend our procedures and policies in respect of equal opportunities accordingly. Chambers recognises the limitations on access for mobility impaired persons caused by the construction of the building and the limitations imposed by the Landlords.
